Talk to a human

When the opps are real, get a lawyer.

Record Deal Opps is your first pass: it finds the dangerous clauses and explains them in plain English. But it is not a lawyer. Before you sign anything risky, take your analysis to a licensed entertainment attorney. Here is who that looks like in the Atlanta area, and what it actually costs.

What lawyers actually cost

Almost no entertainment lawyer publishes prices. You have to call and ask. These are typical market ranges for music lawyers, not quotes from anyone listed below.

Big-firm partners

$400 - $1,000+ / hour

The Billboard-list names at major firms. Usually require a retainer before they start. Best when serious money or litigation is on the table.

Boutique and solo music lawyers

$250 - $500 / hour

Smaller practices that live in the music business. Often the best fit for an independent artist reviewing a single deal.

Flat-fee contract review

$500 - $2,000

Many music lawyers will quote one flat price to review a contract, so you know the cost upfront. Ask for this first. Many also offer a free 30-minute consult.

Tip: if money is tight, look up your state's Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts program. Many offer free or low-cost help to qualifying artists.
